According to some users, the newest Windows update removes files from the Windows desktop. However, the data seems not permanently lost, rather Windows has saved it under a different file name during the installation of the update.

What’s the big deal with this Windows 10 update?

After installing the update, affected people have discovered that Microsoft has restored Windows settings to their default values. The modified files can be found in the path C: \ Users.

However, some users claim that they will no longer have access to their user profile folder after installing the update, and their personal files are allegedly lost. The same goes for the Windows Start menu, the task-bar, and the desktop icons. The background image is also replaced by black.

Microsoft tells Bleeping Computer that it is aware of the problem and is currently investigating it. The site also provides advanced user recovery instructions. However, there are no guarantees for  success. The instructions can be found here and you should try them at your own risk.

The issues are with Windows 10 version 1909. You can check the current version of Windows with the command winver.
